Federal Agencies Fail To Mull Equipment Leases Over Buys

Law360, New York (February 8, 2012, 7:30 PM EST) -- Federal agencies often fail to consider whether they can save money by leasing equipment rather than buying, according to a Tuesday report by the U.S. Government Accountability Office that focused on lease-versus-purchase analyses performed at the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Department of the Interior.

The GAO looked at 16 Air Force and 16 Interior Department equipment acquisitions, and found that contracting officers had failed to perform lease-versus-purchase analysis and failed to consider the alternative acquisition method for 24 of the 32 contracts. The GAO performed...
