Warner Bros. Escapes 'Last Samurai' IP Suit

Law360, New York (February 15, 2012, 7:33 PM EST) -- A California federal judge released Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc. on Tuesday from a lawsuit brought by two writers who claimed the studio stole their idea for the 2003 blockbuster "The Last Samurai," letting the studio off the hook just weeks before trial.

U.S. District Judge Philip S. Gutierrez granted Warner Bros.' motion for summary judgment, saying there wasn't enough triable, timely evidence admitted to the record to show that the studio had knowledge of the screenplay written by plaintiffs Aaron and Matthew Benay.
