Sixth Circuit Upholds UAW Deals With Ford, GM

Law360, New York (August 7, 2007, 12:00 AM EDT) -- A federal appeals court on Tuesday shot down retirees' objections to the United Auto Workers' benefits settlements with Ford Motor Co. and General Motors Corp., affirming a Detroit district court's earlier approval of the deals.

In its opinion, the Sixth Circuit emphasized the financial nosedive both automotive giants have taken in the last twenty years. And while their market shares declined, it said, their retiree benefits costs skyrocketed due to a combination of rising healthcare costs and the growing ratio of retirees to employees.
