No Smiles In Samsung, RIM Emoticon Infringement Suits

Law360, New York (March 16, 2012, 2:50 PM EDT) -- Research In Motion Corp. and Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. on Thursday were each tagged with separate lawsuits by a company that claims the wireless device makers infringe its patent related to the use of emoticons in phone text messaging.

Varia Holdings LLC says in each suit that RIM and Samsung are willfully selling cellphones incorporating the plaintiff's patented method of selecting and entering images of smiley faces and other expressions in text messaging.
