Pentagon Faces Stiff Opposition Over Base Closure Plans

Law360, New York (March 21, 2012, 5:20 PM EDT) -- Lawmakers pushed back Wednesday against the Pentagon’s plans to close U.S. military bases, with Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., telling top military officials that she will not support legislation to authorize a new Base Realignment and Closure Commission in 2012.

As the U.S. Department of Defense downsizes from two wars, it plans to save money by reducing unneeded infrastructure, such as bases in the U.S. and Europe, although it has not factored those savings into its budget plans because of the political uncertainty.
