James Cameron Denies Stealing 'Avatar' From Fantasy Writer

Law360, New York (March 23, 2012, 3:52 PM EDT) -- Director James Cameron told a California federal judge on Thursday that his blockbuster film "Avatar" is far different from a screenwriter's unmade fantasy film, calling on the court to dismiss one of several suits that claim he ripped off the idea for the 2009 box office smash.

The lawsuit in question, which also targets Twentieth Century Fox Film Corp., alleges Cameron poached the idea for his movie from Elijah Schkeiban's "Bats and Butterflies," a story about a boy who travels to a magical land and befriends...
