CSIRO To Rake In $230M After WLAN Patent Settlements

By Ben James (April 2, 2012, 3:43 PM EDT) -- Australia's Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation's settled wireless local area network patent claims it brought against Broadcom Corp., Gateway Inc., AT&T Mobility LLC and others in Texas will rake in more than AU$220 million ($229 million), an Australian senator said Sunday.

The funds that CSIRO — Australia's national science agency — will receive from this latest round of WLAN licensing pushes the total revenue earned from the technology to more than AU$430 million ($448 million), said Minister for Science and Research Senator Chris Evans. CSIRO launched litigation in 2005 and settled with 14 companies in 2009, Evans added.
