AOL Patent Buy Gives Microsoft A Leg Up In Patent Wars

Law360, New York (April 9, 2012, 11:34 PM EDT) -- Microsoft Corp.'s move Monday to join the frenzy of high-dollar patent deals by shelling out $1 billion for 800 AOL Inc. patents could give the tech giant security against future infringement actions and provide a potent weapon it can use against rivals, attorneys say.

Microsoft already has a sizable patent portfolio, so the amount it paid for AOL's patents indicates that at least a handful of them caught Microsoft's eye as either an offensive or defensive litigation tool, said Lance Lieberman of Cozen O'Connor.
