US To Pay Tribes $1B For Mismanaged Trusts, Resources

Law360, New York (April 11, 2012, 6:21 PM EDT) -- The federal government said Wednesday it had reached a $1 billion settlement with 41 Native American tribes over several long-running lawsuits alleging the government had mismanaged natural resources and monetary assets held in trust for the benefit of the tribes.

Some of the claims went back 100 years, according to a joint statement from the U.S. Department of Interior and the U.S. Department of Justice.
