Streamlined Nuke Lab Oversight Could Cut Costs, Scientists Say

Law360, New York (April 18, 2012, 6:59 PM EDT) -- The U.S. Department of Energy could safely cut spending at contractor-operated nuclear weapons research laboratories by improving the oversight process and re-establishing trust between the two sides, scientists told a U.S. Senate Armed Services subcommittee Tuesday.

The directors of three national labs contracted by the DOE, along with two private sector scientists who chair a National Academy of Science committee reviewing the management of those labs, all stressed the need for a more streamlined and cost-effective process moving away from the current transactional model of oversight....
