Trustees Report Leads To Calls For Medicare Reform

Law360, New York (April 23, 2012, 7:24 PM EDT) -- The Medicare trustees report released Monday increased the pressure on lawmakers to get serious about reforming the entitlement program, although experts caution against what they say are overblown, politically motivated claims that the program will go broke by 2024.

The trustees' annual report to Congress predicted that the hospital insurance trust fund, which fuels Medicare Part A, will become “exhausted” starting in 2024, meaning any surpluses will have run out and that payroll taxes will not be enough to cover all of Part A's expenditures. The...
