Forgent Sues Microsoft Over JPEG Patent

Law360 (April 21, 2005, 12:00 AM EDT) -- Forgent Networks has sued Microsoft for infringing a patent for JPEG digital image compression, just days after Microsoft filed a declaratory-action lawsuit against Forgent subsidiary Compression Labs in a preemptive strike.

Microsoft is the latest target of Forgent’s expansive patent litigation, which includes defendants such as Apple, Dell, Kodak, HP, IBM, Macromedia and Xerox.

The move came after it failed to negotiate a licensing agreement with Microsoft, one of the last high-tech companies to have avoided a lawsuit.
