Ill. Lawmaker Denies Bribery Charge Tied To State Grant

Law360, Chicago (April 30, 2012, 4:02 PM EDT) -- Illinois state Rep. Derrick Smith, D-Chicago, pled not guilty Monday to a federal bribery charge for allegedly taking a $7,000 cash payment to help a day care center he believed was applying for a $50,000 state grant.

Smith, 48, was softspoken during his arraignment in Illinois federal court, where he denied the charge stemming from a government sting operation in which a Smith campaign worker cooperating with the FBI allegedly talked to the lawmaker in recorded conversations about lending his help in exchange for the money....
