Judge Blocks Texas' Attempt To Defund Planned Parenthood

Law360, New York (April 30, 2012, 4:52 PM EDT) -- A federal judge on Monday halted Texas’ attempt to cut off health care funds to affiliates of Planned Parenthood, saying the push by opponents of abortion rights likely runs afoul of free-speech protections.

U.S. District Judge Lee Yeakel issued the preliminary injunction just one day before the Planned Parenthood chapters were set to be disqualified from a program offering medical services to low-income women, even though the clinics focus on preventative health checks and don’t perform abortions.
