Auto Giants Receive Blow In Emissions Battle

Law360, New York (September 12, 2007, 12:00 AM EDT) -- In a landmark ruling, a Vermont district judge has knocked down top auto makers' attempts to derail a state's efforts to significantly curb carbon dioxide emissions from cars and light trucks, handing environmental groups another big win in their crusade against global warming.

On Wednesday, U.S. District Judge William K. Sessions rejected the arguments peddled by General Motors Corp., DaimlerChrysler AG and others, disagreeing that the Vermont law at the heart of the case clashed with federal statutes regulating fuel economy.
