Ga. Cities, Travel Websites Reach Deal In Tax Evasion Suit

Law360, New York (June 5, 2012, 10:58 PM EDT) -- A Georgia federal judge on Tuesday approved a partial settlement trimming claims from a class suit in which 259 Georgia cities and counties accuse online travel companies Expedia Inc., Orbitz Worldwide, Inc., Inc. and others of dodging local taxes through contracts with hotels.

U.S. District Judge Harold L. Murphy preliminarily approved the settlement resolving the class's excise tax claims stemming from hotel occupancies after May 16, 2011, and set a fairness hearing for Aug. 16. The settlement does not apply to any of the Georgia...
