BP Refinery Ignored Advice For Years: Blast Reports

Law360, New York (September 13, 2007, 12:00 AM EDT) -- Suggestions for a type of flare that would have prevented the deadly Texas City refinery blast had been circulating since 1977, according to internal reports and e-mails presented on Tuesday at the first civil trial stemming from the explosion.

Documents dating back from thirty years ago to 1999, after BP PLC acquired the plant from Amoco, chronicled suggestions for adding a flare that would have burned the excess liquids and vapors that, when released into the air, set off the unit in question.
