Sanction-Marred Toyota Acceleration Suit Remains Bellwether

Law360, New York (June 18, 2012, 8:41 PM EDT) -- A California federal judge ruled Wednesday he would maintain the bellwether status of a suit against Toyota Motor Sales USA Inc. in the multidistrict litigation over an unintended-acceleration defect, despite the sanctions he imposed against the automaker in the case.

U.S. District Judge James V. Selna handed down the ruling, over Toyota's objection, following an informal status conference on Wednesday. Documents filed ahead of the conference are under seal, and a Toyota spokeswoman declined to comment on the meeting, saying it was “closed and confidential.” Attorneys...
