Apple V. Motorola's End Raises Standards In Smartphone Wars

Law360, New York (June 25, 2012, 9:25 PM EDT) -- The ruling Friday throwing out a patent dispute between Apple Inc. and Motorola Inc. could have broad ramifications for the global patent war being waged over smartphones by toughening the standards for proving damages and limiting injunctions on standard-essential patents, attorneys say.

Apple and Motorola had accused each other of patent infringement, but Seventh Circuit Judge Richard Posner, sitting by designation in district court, ruled that neither company could prove it was entitled to damages or an injunction and dismissed the case with prejudice.
