Senate Passes Bill To Expedite Tribal Land Leases

Law360, New York (July 17, 2012, 5:48 PM EDT) -- The U.S. Senate passed a bill Tuesday that would streamline building projects on Indian lands by allowing Native American tribes to lease restricted property for public or private use without prior approval from the secretary of the interior.

H.R. 205, the Helping Expedite and Advance Responsible Tribal Home Ownership Act, introduced last year by Rep. Martin Heinrich, D-N.M., removes a regulatory hurdle for tribes looking to encourage development for public, religious, educational, recreational, residential, business and other purposes.
