Law360, New York (July 24, 2012, 5:56 PM EDT) -- The Ninth Circuit on Tuesday affirmed a district court's dismissal of forced-labor claims brought by former members of the Church of Scientology International, ruling the plaintiffs had failed to show how the church had used improper means to compel their labor.
The appeals court said former scientologists Claire and Marc Headley, who claim the church used psychological pressure to keep them working, had innumerable opportunities to leave the church and suffered no harm once they actually did leave.
There was little evidence on record showing the church had used force, physical restraint, serious harm or threats to support the Headleys' claim...
