Pfizer's Chantix Warning Strong Enough, Judge Says

Law360, New York (July 25, 2012, 6:56 PM EDT) -- An Alabama federal judge ruled Monday that black box warnings on Pfizer Inc.’s anti-smoking medicine Chantix were sufficient to warn patients about risks of suicidal thoughts, setting the stage for the drugmaker to escape a large number of cases in multidistrict litigation.

Lawsuits targeting the tobacco cessation treatment contend that the warning imposed in July 2009 wrongly failed to mention that patients could experience “feelings of hopelessness or symptoms of suicidality,” but U.S. District Judge Inge Prytz Johnson suggested that argument is splitting hairs.
