Supreme Court Asked To Review Calif. Gay Marriage Saga

Law360, Los Angeles (July 31, 2012, 9:14 PM EDT) -- Opponents of gay marriage on Tuesday asked the U.S. Supreme Court to review a Ninth Circuit ruling that struck down a California state law against same-sex marriage, a move long expected by followers of the closely watched case.

Supporters of Proposition 8, which voters narrowly passed in 2008, said in their petition that the question the case presents is whether the 14th Amendment's Equal Protection Clause prohibits California “from defining marriage as the union of a man and a woman.”
