Philly Says $200M Deficit Voids Firefighters' Award

Law360, New York (August 2, 2012, 6:19 PM EDT) -- The city of Philadelphia filed a formal appeal Thursday challenging an arbitrator’s decision to grant 3 percent pay raises to the city’s unionized firefighters, arguing the award would violate state law by leaving the city with a massive budget deficit.

According to the city’s appeal, which was filed in the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas on Thursday, the award put the city $211 million over its anticipated budget for the fire department through fiscal year 2017.
