Five Charged In Philly Cadaver Selling Scandal

Law360, New York (October 5, 2007, 12:00 AM EDT) -- Three Philadelphia-based funeral directors sold hundreds of cadavers to a former oral surgeon and nurse, who then dismembered them in unsanitary conditions and resold the diseased body parts for use in transplants, a grand jury charged on Thursday.

For over 18 months between February 2004 and September 2005, Louise Garzone, Gerald Garzone and James McCafferty stole diseased body parts from 244 Philadelphia corpses and sold each part for around $1,000 each to a New Jersey-based tissue-trading company.
