Judge Rejects New Charges Against Ex-NY Sen.

Law360, New York (August 24, 2012, 2:45 PM EDT) -- A New York federal judge on Friday denied a bid by prosecutors to add new charges in their tax fraud case against former New York state Sen. Pedro Espada Jr., who also faces sentencing for stealing from a health network.

U.S. District Judge William H. Pauley said he would not allow prosecutors to file a superseding tax fraud indictment against Espada, who was separately convicted in May 2011 of stealing from a nonprofit health network. The jury deadlocked on additional charges in that case, setting up...
