Driverless-Car Safety Bill Clears Calif. Assembly

Law360, San Diego (August 29, 2012, 2:54 PM EDT) -- The California Assembly on Tuesday waved through a measure that would set safety and performance standards for operating driverless vehicles that are being tested by Google Inc. and other automakers.

The full Assembly voted 66-2 to approve S.B. 1298, which would allow so-called autonomous vehicles to be operated on the state’s roads and highways by licensed drivers who can take over manual control of the vehicle in the event of a problem, as well as require the California Department of Motor Vehicles to establish an application...
