EU Seeks To Limit Food-Based Biofuels

Law360, New York (October 17, 2012, 6:27 PM EDT) -- The European Commission proposed Wednesday to limit the amount of food-based biofuels that will count toward its goal of boosting renewable energy in the transportation sector, saying that converting land to grow crops for fuel production undermines emissions cuts.

The commission said it would limit the portion of food-based biofuels used to reach renewable energy targets to 5 percent, vowing to incentivize development of second- and third-generation biofuels instead.
