Copyright Office Announces Expanded Exemptions To DMCA

Law360, New York (October 26, 2012, 8:28 PM EDT) -- The U.S. Copyright Office on Friday published new exemptions to the Digital Millennium Copyright Act that set out acceptable scenarios in which the technological controls used to restrict access to copyrighted works may be skirted.

In a final rule published in the Federal Register, the Copyright Office set out new exemptions to the DMCA, including provisions that support read-aloud functionality in copyrighted works used by the blind and the capturing of video excerpts for various noncommercial applications.
