Stunning Lawyers, Merck Plans To Settle Vioxx Cases

Law360, New York (November 9, 2007, 12:00 AM EST) -- In a remarkable reversal in litigation strategy, drug maker Merck & Co. is reportedly planning to announce Friday that it will settle injury claims related to 85% of the 27,000 cases the company is facing over the painkiller Vioxx for $4.85 billion.

U.S. District Judge Eldon Fallon is expected to announce the settlement in New Orleans on Friday, both the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times and Bloomberg News reported early Friday morning Eastern time.
