Universal Sues Adult Film Co. Over '50 Shades' Rip-Off

Law360, New York (November 30, 2012, 6:20 PM EST) -- Universal City Studios LLC and the copyright owner of the best-selling “Fifty Shades” book series sued adult film studio Smash Pictures Inc. in California federal court Tuesday, alleging its pornographic adaptations of the trilogy infringe their copyrights.

According to the complaint, Smash Pictures — named as a defendant along with Luv Moves and online retailer Adult DVD Empire — produced and marketed “Fifty Shades of Grey: A XXX Adaptation,” based on the novel by author E.L. James. The suit says Smash is currently in production on versions...
