Groupon's $8.5M MDL Settlement Approved On 2nd Try

Law360, New York (December 18, 2012, 11:06 PM EST) -- A California federal judge on Tuesday approved Groupon Inc.'s $8.5 million settlement with plaintiffs in multidistrict litigation over certificates sold with allegedly illegal expiration dates, after the parties dropped a charitable award to non-class members that the judge had deemed inappropriate.

U.S. District Judge Dana M. Sabraw signed off on the reworked deal, which dropped the $75,000 cy pres award to the Electronic Frontier Foundation and the Center for Democracy and Technology and instead added the money to the common fund for class members. He had...
