Anheuser-Busch Can Trademark 'Bud,' EU Court Says

Law360, New York (January 22, 2013, 3:52 PM EST) -- A European Union court said Tuesday that Anheuser-Busch InBev NV could trademark the term “Bud” to sell its beer in Europe, rejecting Czech brewer Budejovicky Budvar NP's opposition to the registration.

The General Court of the European Union dismissed Budvar's claim that “Bud” was an appellation of origin — a protected geographical indicator, like Champagne or Parmigiano — and thus couldn't be trademarked.
