McDonald's To Settle Halal Chicken False Ad Suit

Law360, New York (January 22, 2013, 6:43 PM EST) -- A Michigan state judge on Friday preliminarily approved a $700,000 settlement in a putative class action accusing two McDonald's Corp. franchises of falsely advertising chicken products as halal and causing a Muslim customer to unknowingly violate Islamic dietary requirements.

McDonald's and Finley's Management Co. Inc., which owns the Dearborn, Mich., restaurants that allegedly sold the nonhalal chicken, will pay the entire settlement — minus unspecified attorneys' fees and a plaintiff's award — to a Detroit-based nonprofit that provides free medical services to several Muslim communities and...
