Ex-NY Senate Leader Espada Gets 5 Years For Theft

Law360, New York (June 14, 2013, 5:18 PM EDT) -- A Brooklyn federal judge sentenced onetime New York state Senate majority leader Pedro Espada Jr. to five years in prison Friday for theft of federal funds from Bronx-based nonprofit health care clinics and for lying on his 2005 personal tax return.

Judge Frederic Block also gave the 58-year-old former Empire State legislative leader three years of supervised release, ordered him to pay $118,000 back to the IRS and repay theft victims in an amount to be determined, and slapped him with a $368,000 forfeiture.
