Merck, Pa. Reach $8.25M Settlement Over Vioxx Disclosures

Law360, Philadelphia (February 22, 2013, 1:01 PM EST) -- Pennsylvania has reached an $8.25 million settlement with Merck & Co. in a suit — part of multidistrict litigation — accusing the drugmaker of fraudulently representing its drug Vioxx and prompting the state to pay more than it would have for safer medications, Attorney General Kathleen Kane announced Friday.

The state’s lawsuit against Merck contended that the company did not disclose studies that demonstrated that use of Vioxx — a now-withdrawn anti-inflammatory drug — increased the risk of serious illnesses, including strokes and heart attacks. The...
