Major Makeover In The Works For Mexican Competition Law

Law360, New York (March 18, 2013, 11:46 AM EDT) -- Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto recently proposed sweeping constitutional amendments targeted at "intensify[ing] the economic competition in all sectors of the economy, with special emphasis on strategic sectors such as telecommunications, financial services, and energy." The proposed legislation is supported by leaders of the three main political parties in Mexico, the Institutional Revolutionary Party, the National Action Party, and the Party of the Democratic Revolution. The proposed amendments must still be approved by the Mexican legislature as well as requiring "secondary" implementing legislation. To say the proposed laws address a broad range of issues in the areas of competition law and the regulation of the telecommunications and broadcast industries would be an understatement....
