UC Regents To Pay $1.2M Over Faulty Anesthesia Supervision

Law360, Washington (March 27, 2013, 7:16 PM EDT) -- The University of California Board of Regents will hand $1.2 million to the federal government to settle allegations that it let residents and nurse anesthetists administer anesthesia without proper supervision and made improper Medicare and Medicaid claims for anesthesia services, a whistleblower's attorney announced Wednesday.

David O'Connor, a former University of California, Irvine, professor and anesthesiologist, hit the university system with the qui tam suit in 2008, claiming UCI routinely prefiled anesthesia records to circumvent federal supervision regulations.
