Reuters Unit Beats DMV Data Collection Class In 8th Circ.

Law360, New York (April 10, 2013, 2:04 PM EDT) -- The Eighth Circuit on Tuesday ruled that Thomson Reuters Corp. unit West Publishing Corp. did not violate federal privacy law when it obtained driver's license information from state databases and sold the information to third parties, overturning a district court decision certifying a class against the company.

The appeals court said named plaintiff Marcy Johnson had failed to show that West acquired the data for anything other than permitted activities under the Driver's Privacy Protection Act. That law allows states to sell driver information to wholesale...
