Forgent, BlackBerry Maker Ink Licensing Pact

Law360, New York (October 28, 2005, 12:00 AM EDT) -- BlackBerry maker Research in Motion Ltd. and Forgent Networks, two companies entrenched in separate patent wars, have penned a licensing deal over Forgent’s patent for the popular JPEG imaging file format.

The deal gives RIM license to use the technology in U.S. Patent No. 4,698,672, covering the digital image compression used in cameras, cell phones, printers, scanners and other devices, according to Forgent officials in Austin, Texas.

Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
