NYC Council Overwhelmingly Approves Paid Sick Time Bill

Law360, New York (May 8, 2013, 5:55 PM EDT) -- The New York City Council on Wednesday passed legislation requiring employers to provide sick time, paid or unpaid depending on the size of a business, to employees — and city lawmakers said the 45-3 vote gave them enough support to override an expected veto by Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

The Earned Sick Time Act requires businesses with 20 or more employees to provide five paid sick days to their employees beginning April 1, 2014. The mandate extends to businesses with 15 or more employees Oct. 1, 2015....
