3rd Circ. OKs $4M Arbitration Award For Dating Site Workers

Law360, Los Angeles (June 7, 2013, 6:43 PM EDT) -- The Third Circuit on Friday upheld a $3.8 million arbitration award for employees of a now-defunct dating website, ruling that a Pennsylvania-based employee benefits firm lost its chance to dispute the money claimed in a death insurance policy when its lawyer skipped an arbitration hearing.

Pennmont Benefit Services Inc. argued that seven EverythingforLove.com employees shouldn't have been able to collect on the policy because the website's co-owner allegedly hadn't earned a salary in the years before she died and therefore wasn't an employee. The company also...
