Watchdog Faults DOD Over $772M Afghan Aircraft Buy

Law360, New York (July 1, 2013, 8:27 PM EDT) -- The Department of Defense is moving forward with a $771.8 million purchase of aircraft for Afghanistan's counternarcotics and counterterrorism efforts, even though the Afghans lack the capacity to operate and maintain the aircraft, according to a Friday audit report.

The DOD has recently awarded contracts to purchase 48 new aircraft on behalf of the Afghan Special Mission Wing, which provides air support to Afghan Special Forces counterterrorism and counternarcotics missions, under the authority of Afghanistan’s Ministry of Defense and its Ministry of the Interior, according to...
