DOE Pulls Plug On FutureGen Clean-Coal Plant

Law360, New York (January 30, 2008, 12:00 AM EST) -- The U.S. Department of Energy announced Wednesday that it is pulling out of its significant financial role in the FutureGen Alliance clean-coal power plant in Mattoon, Ill., and restructuring its coal program.

The department will instead fund the carbon capture and storage technologies for multiple integrated gasification combined cycle plants.

The department had previously agreed to foot 74% of the $1.8 billion cost of the FutureGen Alliance plant. Rising costs of that program and changing technologies have prompted the restructuring, the DOE said.
