AmEx, GE, Citibank Force Debt Collection Suit Into Arbitration

Law360, New York (July 15, 2013, 6:54 PM EDT) -- American Express Co., GE Capital and Citibank on Friday won a bid to arbitrate putative class action claims alleging illegal debt collection practices when a New York federal judge ruled the class action waivers in their contracts with credit card customers were enforceable.

U.S. District Judge Shira A. Scheindlin relied on last month's U.S. Supreme Court decision in American Express v. Italian Colors Restaurant in ordering arbitration of racketeering and consumer protection claims that are part of a lawsuit filed in September against debt collection agencies...
