Law360, New York (August 8, 2013, 1:49 PM EDT) -- Marvel Comics Worldwide Inc. owns the work of a famed cartoonist who contributed to comic books like the "Fantastic Four" and "X-Men," the Second Circuit ruled Thursday, shooting down a legal challenge from his heirs.

Artist Jack Kirby contributed his work to to Marvel on a work-for-hire basis, so the company retains copyright over his work, a three-judge panel of the appeals court ruled.
