Anthem Blue Cross Shirks Eating Disorder Coverage, Suit Says

Law360, New York (August 20, 2013, 1:24 PM EDT) -- Anthem Blue Cross was hit with a proposed class action in California state court Monday that accuses the insurer of wrongfully denying coverage for eating disorders, in violation of a state mental health law.

According to plaintiff Shelby Oppel, an Anthem policyholder who has been treated for bulimia nervosa, the company has artificially capped coverage for eating disorders bulimia and anorexia nervosa to meet preset cost goals, in violation of  California’s Mental Health Parity Act, which requires insurers to cover all medically necessary treatment for both conditions....
