Berlin Zoo Wins Trademark Row Over Polar Bear Knut

Law360, New York (September 16, 2013, 1:38 PM EDT) -- A European Union court sided with the Berlin Zoo on Monday and ruled that a British company couldn't register a trademark for “Knut” — the name of a polar bear born at the zoo that later became a media sensation.

The EU General Court affirmed a decision by the bloc's trademark office to bar Knut IP Management Ltd. from registering an EU-wide mark for "Knut — Der Eisbar," which means “Knut — The Polar Bear” in German, for a wide range of merchandise.
