NYC Council Bans Workplace Pregnancy Discrimination

Law360, New York (September 24, 2013, 4:57 PM EDT) -- A unanimous New York City Council on Tuesday voted to approve a new law that prohibits most city employers from refusing to provide reasonable accommodations for pregnant women and gives those who believe they have faced discrimination the right to bring civil litigation.

The legislation, passed by a veto-proof 47-0 vote, applies to all businesses with four or more employees, including independent contractors. Businesses that would face “undue hardship” in making such accommodations also would be excluded, the bill says.
