Insurers Ask JPML To Merge Electrolux Dryer Fire Suits

By Matt Fair (September 26, 2013, 4:40 PM EDT) -- A pair of insurers urged the U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation on Thursday to centralize nearly 50 pending cases alleging that dryers manufactured by Electrolux Home Products Inc. contained a fire-causing design defect after arguing that it would ease a contentious discovery process.

In arguments before the panel in Philadelphia, attorneys for State Farm Fire and Casualty Co. and American Family Mutual Insurance Co., which are pursuing subrogation claims against Electrolux, accused the company of withholding evidence in the cases and suggested that creating an MDL in U.S. District Court in Chicago would help the insurers navigate the discovery process....
